Local Area
Jim Wright has a studio and gallery at his home in the small market
town of Kirkbymoorside, 25 miles North East of York. The town lies
at the foot of the North Yorkshire National Park. To the south of the
town sandwiched between the Vale of Pickering and the Vale of York
stretch the Howardian Hills. Locally this provides a wealth of differing
landscapes from ancient oak woodlands to the wide open expanses
of the heather clad moors.
Travelling just a little more than twenty miles North or East from
Kirkbymoorside you reach the sea. All along this North Yorkshire
coastline there is an equally rich diversity of landscapes and
seascapes to be inspired by, from the towering limestone cliffs and
rugged coves around Flamborough, to the sweeping sands of Filey
and Scarborough.
The fishing industry is changing, but the harbours of Whitby
Scarborough and Bridlington still have a vibrancy and present
continually changing scenes in response to the elements. Tucked
into the cliffs along the coast are delightful little fishing villages, with
drying nets, crab pots and steep cobbled lanes - an artists paradise.
